Strict Boundaries for Version Control

Engineers frequently learn about version control boundaries the hard way after pushing a repository to a public host. Unfiltered shell history files routinely capture ephemeral session tokens and database passwords within the first 1,000-2,000 lines of execution. Define suitable repository contents strictly. Include intentional shell settings, editor defaults, Git aliases, formatter configuration, package manifests, and a short bootstrap script.

Exclude credentials, tokens, private keys, command history, machine-generated caches, session state, absolute local paths, and copied configuration that the author cannot explain. Address machine-specific differences with explicit operating-system checks or local untracked files. Machine-specific overrides are best handled by sourcing a local .zshrc.local file that is explicitly added to .gitignore. Treat every plugin and abstraction as a dependency that must justify its startup cost, failure modes, and maintenance burden. Every third-party prompt theme introduces at least 3-5 external dependencies that must be tracked and updated.

Boring defaults improve debugging, pair programming, incident response, and movement between machines because fewer invisible assumptions follow the developer. When an incident occurs at 3 AM, navigating a server using standard POSIX commands is a required skill. Relying on a heavily customized local environment degrades that muscle memory. Keep the tooling sharp, minimal, and universally applicable.
